- Medina County Art League About Us
Medina County Art League History Mary Claggett never realized her dream of helping establish an art and cultural center in Medina County, but her unceasing activity planted the seed in the minds of local artists. In 1958, she founded the not-for-profit Medina County Art League. She remained as president until 1970 when Jeanne Nichols became president. The League's purpose has always been the promotion of an active interest in the arts, conduct and participate in art shows and aiding students of Medina County in obtaining further education in the arts. We have been a continual supporter of community events and receptive to requests for participation. Every summer in July the League sponsors Art In The Park around the Gazebo at the Medina Square with 130 local and visiting fine artists, juried awards, and scholarship tent where artists contribute select pieces to help raise funds that are then awarded in March of each year to several deserving seniors starting college in the fall with an emphasis in Art. History A Picket Fence Show in the uptown park in 1961 foreshadowed our aforementioned Art in the Park. Early Meetings were held in member's homes, at the high school cafeteria or in the art room. In 1972, they moved to the Nichols Community Room. In 2002, they moved to the newly established Grace Drake Center for the Performing Arts and most recently, in 2009, moved to the A.I. Root Meeting Room. Projects of the league have included decorating the children's room at Medina County Hospital, art shows and scholarships for high school students, and annual art shows for members. Meetings have featured demonstrations of painting techniques, crafts, jewelry, silk-screen, welding, photography, and flower arranging. Critiques have been held to evaluate members' work. The Medina County Art League was incorporated in 1973. About Us
- Art Scholarships | MCAL Official
Art Scholarships Each March the Medina County Art League presents scholarships to local high school students to further their education. One of Medina County Art League’s goals is to provide educational opportunities for our members and for the community. We do so by hosting inexpensive and free to members workshops, but we really shine when it comes to giving out scholarships. These scholarships go out to Medina County graduating high school seniors who are furthering their education in an arts related field. Their work is always fabulous. See how all that hard earned scholarship fund is being spent. Because of the hard work of the scholarship committee and members and the generosity of our community, in 2025 the MCAL was able to raise the value of each scholarship by 25%! Donations Donations are accepted for our Scholarships funds year-round and also at our Scholarship tent at Art in the Park in June. Thank you for supporting these young artists in their artistic endeavors. DONATE TODAY

Reception Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 1-3pm Our Juror Awards Our Juror We would like to thank this year’s juror for judging this exhibit: Mary Urbas Mary Urbas has been the Gallery Director/Exhibition Curator/Installation Designer for The Gallery at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland since 2005. Mary has over 43 years of experience in the professional art world as a gallery owner, curator, teacher, consultant, and an award winning exhibiting Fiber Artist. She received her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art with a major in Textile Design and Silk Screen Printing, with minors in Weaving and Printmaking. She was the Gallery Manager and Shipping/Receiving Manager at Sylvia Ullman's American Crafts Gallery in Cleveland, for 17+ years. She opened her own gallery in 1997, called The Gallery in Chagrin Falls that featured contemporary Fine Art and Fine Crafts. She became the Gallery Curator and Assistant Director at the Valley Art Center (in Chagrin Falls 2001- 2005), teaching classes to adults and summer art camps for children. Mary teaches a class at The Cleveland Institute of Art, Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, Lakeland Community College, Notre Dame College, Ursuline College and The Valley Art Center: Professional Practices/The Business of Art for Artists: Presenting and Promoting Your Art”; that is designed as a first-step towards helping the developing, as well as established artist make a successful transition from creating art to presenting and promoting it... Mary also enjoys teaching young artists Textile Design and World Art through after-school and summer art camp programs at various art centers. Juror Statement It is always a privilege and a challenge to award prizes to work submitted to an art exhibition. I would like to express my thanks to all those who entered work. I know from long experience what it is like to submit my own artworks into similar shows, and how nerve-wracking the process can be. I also understand and appreciate the investment of time and passionate interest that is bound up in any art object or project. I really enjoyed spending time with the artworks. When I jury a show, I look for four things: Unique idea: Something that is your very own, maybe a different twist on an old theme. Creative design: A composition that balances all of the elements of design... line, value, color, and shape.... using repetition, texture, pattern to evoke a mood. Execution: Knowledge of the broad range of the medium and expertise in application, which only comes with practice, practice, practice.... Presentation: Using the appropriate materials to enhance the work. Judging the show for prizes presented me with an opportunity to view new and compelling art from member artists of the Medina County Art League; artists that I was not familiar with. I took pleasure in making these new discoveries. - Mary Urbas Awards Best of Show "Leaving Home" by Donna Bargar Watercolor People's Choice "Gentle Giant" by Karen Marten Watercolor First Place "Something's Afoot" by Judy Hohl Oil on Canvas Second Place "After the Fog Cleared" by Betty Siska Pastel Third Place "Pick of the Day" by Cindy Craft Watercolor Honorable Mentions "She Dreams of Flying" by Carol Klingel Acrylic on Canvas "Hive" by Teenia Geig Mixed Media "Agricultural Graveyard" by Craig Staufer Oil on Linen Panel "Summer of Life" by Janet Baran Acrylic
